Among with other life skills, one particular skill I wanted my boys to learn is gardening skills. The reason for this is that I wanted them to know:
1. Where does our food come from?
2. How does food grow?
Growing up in a place where my parents and grandparents grew their own food in their back garden and villages. I always liked the idea of growing my own food. Plus it saves me money! Why not ?!
We recently started growing few herbs like basil, dill which we bought from shop. My son picked up spinach seeds and sunflower seeds. You can buy seeds from shops, lots of choices to choose from, which is always great. On the back of the packet it has information on best time to sow seeds and when it will be ready to harvest.
To grow food it is not essential to have a huge garden may be you live in a flat or have tiny garden it doesn’t matter few pots or any container will do the job brilliantly.
I definitely encourage you to do the same with your child or children. It will be little messy (soil, fertiliser and water is involved!). This is a great way to teach them life cycle of plants, how to grow food and where it comes from. You could even save few seeds from the harvest for the next year. Saves you buying it again! And the best part is eating what you grew in your garden!
If you already do this I would love to hear what you grew this season!
Happy learning!
